This .69 caliber socket bayonet was produced for use with the Model 1816 series of muskets, most of these were converted to percussion in the 1850s. The bayonet socket has a "T" mortise, no locking ring, and a flat wide blade with no flutes. Strongly marked "U.S." Bayonet measures 21" long overall, 3" long socket, and 18" long blade. This original Civil War socket bayonet was for an H&P (Hewes & Phillips) conversion, or the Remington (with Maynard tape system) conversion muskets. Condition is excellent with bright finish overall with some scattered darker spotting, mostly on blade.
